We know, Mr. Mark Zuckerberg was trying to please the world’s largest market, where unfortunately the government blocked his most valuable property for years. Once, he even claimed he’s Chinese during a trip to Mainland China. By marrying an American lady of Chinese descent, he really thinks he’s a little more Chinese than ever, although he probably cannot tell the difference between China Proper and Greater China. Actually it doesn’t matter. No Chinese will take his phony statement serious at all, because it’s universally acknowledged that it’s almost impossible to turn a Caucasian into a real Chinese.
With narrow definition of Chinese as People’s Republic of China citizen, it won’t be difficult to acquire such identity for rich man like Mr. Zuckerberg, by simply throwing greenbacks in some poor Chinese faces. Next, he could hire some senior professors from Peking University to coach him to master spoken & written Chinese in 30 days. Last, he should learn to conform to the government’s will, by never visiting any blacklisted websites such as Facebook.
No. No. Nope. This is just Chinese stereotyping bullshit. Sadly Mr. Zuckerburg has almost zero chance to be recognised as Chinese in lifetime. However, his daughter, Max, could be considered as Chinese, no matter she cares or not.

We are so poor at cross-race facial recognition, because it’s so easy for us to concentrate on obvious racial features rather than individual characteristics. Bias? This is human psychology. No wonder that I fell in familiarity quickly after watching Fresh Off the Boat, the latest and first Chinese American stereotyping family sitcom aired in mainstream television network primetime. Well, it must be the same reason the show producer hired Mr Randall Park as the leading actor. Mr Park is a Korean American.
In the end of 2014, confidential data from Sony Pictures Entertainment was hacked by an anonymous group called ‘Guardians of Peace’. The group also threatened SONY to attack cinemas if the film The Interview was released to the public. It was a tasteless political comedy about a plot to assassinate DPRK leader Kim Jong-Un, who was played by Mr Randall Park.
Maybe I just like to see how good he could act like a Chinese in the show with his typical Korean face. At least a Chinese American in 1990s. The story is loosely based on Eddie Huang’s memoir with the same title published in 2013. Eddie is now a food personality in New York. He’s third-generation Chinese immigrant and was born in D.C. in 1980s then later moved to Orlando with family at a young age. So I don’t really feel it so ‘fresh’ here. In the book, he wrote,
My mother’s father had six kids. After the Cultural Revolution, the family fled to Taipei. My grandma was pregnant with my mother at the time so my mother was the only one born there. M.I.T. – Made in Taiwan.
There is a huge defect in the timeline, because his mother couldn’t be born after the Cultural Revolution, which ended in 1976, while Mr Huang was born in 1982. I believe he meant the Civil War, which ended around 1950.
The Chinese Civil War was the ideological conflict between Kuomingtang (KMT) and Communist Party (CPC) from 1927 to 1950. Eventually it resulted two de facto Chinese states, Taiwan (ROC) and China (PRC). The better-known worse-than-war catastrophic Cultural Revolution, formally the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, was a cruel social-political movement in PRC from 1966 until 1976, led by its almighty Chairman Mao. Both incidents are still kind of taboo in PRC as CPC is still in power today. I don’t blame an American for mistaking Chinese history in a book. Actually, who the hell cares about history nowadays since anyone can Google it in a second?
Oh, I forgot to be considerably politically-correct! It’s apparently nothing to do with Chinese history or immigrants. As you see, the show producer has already properly used ‘Five-star Red Flag’ for our ‘Fresh’ family of Taiwanese descent. (Disclaimer: The national flag of PRC is not sponsored by any five-star hotel most affluent PRC tourists like to stay in.) The ‘Fresh’ sitcom appeals to millions of Asian Americans who have largely been excluded or misrepresented in the ‘black & white’ mainstream. Attention, these Asians generally refer to family origins of Far East and Southeast Asia, distinct from Indian subcontinent and Middle East Asians. Sorry, am I undermining stereotypes or enforcing them? What does the show do?
Anyway the show’s cliched oriental gags attracted great reviews from Asian American soecity, and ended up with a ‘Certified Fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes. Getting into mainstream, is that the global-branded American dream for fresh immigrants off the boat? Perhaps. The last criticism: I don’t think the decors and costumes in the show are that accurate for Orlando in 1990s…

The famous Silicon Valley startup mentor Mr Peter Thiel is going to publish his popular Stanford CS183 course as a physical book called Zero to One. Then my friend J asked, why did he still write books to sell since he’s already a billionaire?
Well, apparently it’s not about money. Writing isn’t necessarily a business, especially for non-fiction. So what is about there? The well-known hierarchy of needs theory, coined by psychologist Abraham Maslow in 1943, may explain this. Above physiological, safety, love/belonging and esteem needs, there is self-actualisation on the top of pyramid. Mr Thiel has the very reason to publish his startup theories as a book, in order to spread his words widely.
Back to my friend J, who is a millennial under high exposure of fragmented digital information every where, a possible doubt behind his question could be, why do people write a book nowadays? Or even deeper, why do people read a ‘book’?
We always talk about the decline of printing, or the fall of publishing, and we see closure of bookshops in recent years. Notwithstanding the bad picture, as an advocate of cultural conservatism, I believe book is still the best format for in-depth reading. To a certain extent, book cover, binding, layout, fonts etc matter to me, as part of a complete reading experience. Then in future, people probably will consider book reading more serious, which might be a good thing so only those top quality classics will survive in glorious book form. Blessings!

How not to be selfish while independent? It really bothers me a lot.
It isn’t that hard to find what you like, say love, which seems universal in all cultures. Simply, when one experiences love, more dopamine is released in brain. Oh, that’s the happiness you feel.
My friend A always advises bachelors, marry someone loving you much more than you love her. Great! Practically good advice from his 10-year happy marriage journey, I guess. But isn’t it a little selfish? Okay, let’s see opposite, how about only getting married to one who you love most? Not that selfish? Then, I have to admit that I don’t understand love at all.
Perhaps I’m too short-sighted at this ever-controversial topic. I might not see if Friend A and his wife’s love is still the same as 10 years ago. Probably not, thus, their happiness comes from what they have together over the time, beyond the love. I believe, love is like a flower, which blossoms and withers, then… another spring? No! This is not (500) Days of Summer, though you know, there are tropical worlds, where summer lasts for ever.

]]>What the hell is Disney Channel? I’m an adult for too long I think.
As you guess, Disney Channel belongs to The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS)… crap! But other than showing those classic Disney cartoons with prince and princess, the channel ever produced a few great TV sensations, you know, like the highly-acclaimed High School Musical. Yup, it seems young Zac Efron has grown up to a ‘bad’ Neighbors this year. LOL.
Also remember, there even was a long-hair teenager girl called Miley Cyrus, popular on channel’s series Hannah Montana for years. Oh, no, definitely not the ‘family friendly’ wrecking ball you’ve seen. *cheeky grin*
Nevertheless, forget glories above.
I just like to talk about channel’s 2014 new show Girl Meets World. Have to say, the innocent-looking main character ‘Riley Matthews’ is kinda cute in the teenager sitcom. For the plot, I could imagine it would be more or less about ‘growing pains’. I never watch Boy Meets World before. Why am I interested in this now? I’m not a paedophile. Relax… It’s ok for an adult to watch Disney Channel for awhile, isn’t it? Well, it only reminds me that innocence may has been long gone in life, but curiosity remains somewhere in me. Let’s see.
